Principal’s Message for June 2009
June 2009 Principal’s Message
As I write my final article for the year, it seems impossible that the 2008-2009 year is coming to an end. All I have to do is visit classrooms and see the growth. The students have grown physically and intellectually during these past ten months. The staff has given 110% and it truly is a pleasure to work with them. We have certainly tried our best to make this year positive, productive and successful for the entire school community.
We are in the process of registering new students for the upcoming school year. If you have neighbors or friends who live within our school boundaries, please encourage them to come to the office and register their child.
As I reflect upon this school year, I have many happy memories and a true sense of pride and accomplishment. Our test scores show continued growth and Dearborn remained in the “800 Club” with an API score of 838, up five points from last year’s 833. Our Monday Morning Assemblies allowed every class to lead the flag salute and sing a song or participate in another type of short presentation. The third annual Fall Festival was a huge success, and we have started to begin planning for next year. Our campus is beautiful, thank you to all of you that participated in our campus beautification day in April, and to our amazing Plant Manager, Richard Lashley. I can’t wait for the new batch of Literacy Garden tiles to be installed; it has become a new tradition that I hope you will continue for years to come.
I must take this opportunity to thank the Dearborn PTA for all they have done to enrich and support our school. The funds raised through the Jog-a-thon, PTA Family Dance, gift wrap sale, spirit wear, the Silent Auction and others have paid for a large part of the YMCA Psychomotor Program, two field trips for every classroom, the third and fourth grade art program, additional funds for our library, and so much more. Debilyn Kinzler has done a great job as PTA President this past year and we truly thank her and the entire PTA Board for their hard work and dedication to our school. The staff would like me to publicly thank the PTA for the incredible Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Thanks to all of the families who took the time to show the Dearborn staff how much they are appreciated.
We have so many families and community members that have supported our school throughout the year. Dearborn could not accomplish so much without all of the people who give their time, financial assistance and donate to our school. Our annual Volunteer Appreciation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2009 and invitations were sent to volunteers that supported our school and logged in at least ten hours of official and documented service this year. We would like to thank everyone that has contributed their time, resources and financial support to our school.
As the year comes to an end, I want to say good-bye and thank you to our staff members who will be leaving at the end of this school year. After years of dedicated service, Lisa Marmon, our Assistant Principal and Sherri Blumenthal Diamond will be retiring. We will truly miss Adriana Kurian, Laura Johnson, Lauren Lundy, Penny Marson, Mayela Yanez and Vicky Castellano as they leave the Dearborn family. We wish them the best of luck in the future and hope they will come back and visit. We wish Maria Juarez an easy delivery of her baby and look forward to her return some time during the first semester.
Congratulations to our Fifth Grade Culminating Class of 2009. I wish you the best of luck at middle school next year. I know you will have fond memories of Dearborn and will make us proud.
I want to thank all of the Dearborn families for a wonderful school year. It is an honor and a pleasure to work with the students, parents, staff and community that care so deeply about our school. Have a healthy and happy summer!
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR
During the month of June, the staff and I will be very busy preparing for the 2009-2010 school year. The teachers work with me to organize the classes based on the guidelines of the school district and our goal is to make the best educational placement for each child. With the change in class size, several teachers will be teaching different grade levels next year. We also anticipate having fewer SAS classes/clusters next year. Only students identified by LAUSD as GATE or High Achieving are guaranteed placement in as SAS class/cluster. Many factors are considered when forming classes such as the academic achievement of students, identification as GATE, English Learner, Special Education, work and study habits, as well as a balance of ethnicity and gender. There are guidelines and policies that must be followed when forming classes and we will do our absolute best to meet the needs of all students. Children are adaptable and make friends wherever they are placed. We do not take requests for specific teachers. All of our teachers meet the “Highly Qualified” guidelines of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
Registration for new students has begun. Please complete registration by June 19th so we can accurately form the classes for the new school year. Please share this information with neighbors and friends who will be registering for the fall semester.
The Dearborn office will close for the summer on Tuesday, June 30, 2009. The office is scheduled to reopen on Monday, August 3, 2009.
Students will return to school on Wednesday, September 9, 2009. On the first day of school, students in grades 1-5 will find out who their teacher will be. Our staff members will be on the yard with clipboards and will tell parents and students their new classroom assignments. Kindergarten students and parents will attend a kindergarten orientation on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 1:00PM.
Our school website, www.dearbornelem.org and the district website www.lausd.net are great sources of information.
