As we enter November, we are busy preparing for the many activities that are scheduled
for this month. Our Fall Emergency Drill is scheduled for Thursday, November 13th. The District has directed us to simulate an earthquake on campus. Although we have an earthquake drill each Spring, it is critical that all students and staff know what actions need to be taken in an emergency situation. We must have an emergency card on file for every Dearborn student with current phone numbers where parents and emergency contacts can be reached.
If you see suspicious activity at the school, please call LAUSD School Police at (213) 625-6631. Please remind your students to remain inside the gates where there is supervision, and do not drop your child off before 7:20AM.
Back-to-School Night was very well-attended. It is wonderful to see so many parents interested in hearing about their child’s instructional program. Our academic programs are in full swing, and this is the time of year that many of our students begin to struggle. All of the review work is behind us, and teachers are using every instructional minute available to teach the grade-level standards to their students. The first language arts assessments have been given to students already, and our quarter one math assessments will be given in the beginning of November. Now that teachers have current data, they have sent home low grade warning notices to students who are not meeting grade-level standards. At Back-to-School Night, a brochure of the grade-level standards was given to every parent and the Standards Based Promotion Policy was distributed to grades two through five. We all want our students to be successful. That is why we feel that parents must be informed about their child’s progress. Every parent should have signed a Teacher-Student-Parent Compact; this document clearly states the responsibility of each party to help each Dearborn student achieve success. The first report cards will be given out at parent conferences during the week of December 1 through December 5 to give you the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress. Four minimum days are scheduled with a 12:30 dismissal, and Tuesday, December 2, is still a 1:05 dismissal. Parents, please sign up for your parent conferences for the first reporting period. If you have questions or concerns about your child before our scheduled conference week, please send a note to your child’s teacher and set an appointment to discuss his/her progress.
In life and in school, there is so much to do, and it seems that there is never enough time to get everything done. That is why we try so hard to protect instructional time. Once the bell rings at 7:52, gates will close, and parents will not be allowed to go to classrooms unless they are scheduled to volunteer. We have had a large number of students who have come late to school, forgotten their homework, jacket, lunch or ticket, and well-meaning parents want to go to the classroom. Please help us by ensuring that your child has everything that he/she needs in the morning before you leave the house. Plan to leave home five minutes earlier so that in case of traffic or other events, your child will have time to line up by the first bell at 7:50. If for some reason you must bring something to school for your child, please label it with his/her name and room number, and it will be delivered to the classroom.
We encourage all parents/grandparents to attend our Parent Education mornings. Our math coach, Julie Charbonneau, is planning a wonderful workshop so parents can better understand our math standards, assessments, and how to help their child at home. It is scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, at 8:00 a.m. in the HW Club. Julie Klein, our Literacy Coach, will present Reading and Spelling the Sound Spelling Card Connection for Kindergarten and 1st Grade Parents on Thursday, December 4, at 8:00 a.m. in the homework club. Please mark the date on your calendar. More information will be sent home soon.
November is an appropriate time to count our blessings and take some time to be thankful. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the wonderful parents that generously support our school by donating time and resources to Dearborn, to our students for making me smile each and every day, and to the best staff that any principal could ask for. The dedicated people who work at Dearborn are true professionals that work daily for the benefit of our students. I am very fortunate and thankful to be the principal at Dearborn.
Our website www.dearbornelem.org is a great source of information. We try our best to update it weekly. Ricky Saute is our new Computer Lab TA. We are looking for parent volunteers to join our technology committee and help with our website. If you or someone you know is interested, please have them contact the Dearborn office.
