Dearborn Street School Parent Involvement Policy 2007-2008

  1. An annual Title 1 meeting will be convened, to which all parents of participating children shall be invited and encouraged to attend.  The requirements and rights of parents will be discussed.
  2. There will be a flexible number of parent meetings at convenient times.
  3. Parents will be involved in organizing, ongoing planning, review and improvement of programs including the review of the school parent involvement policy.
  4. Information will be sent home and meetings will be held to explain the curriculum, instruction and assessment at Dearborn.  Expected proficiency levels and standards will be discussed.
  5. A student-parent-school compact will be developed and reviewed.  The purpose of this compact is to improve student achievement.
    • The compact will describe Dearborn’s responsibility to provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables students to meet the state’s student academic achievement standards.
    • Parents will be responsible for supporting their children’s learning, such as monitoring attendance, homework completion, and television watching/electronic media, volunteering in their child’s classroom; and participating, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children.
    • There will be a minimum of one parent-teacher conference per year, during which the compact will be discussed.
    • There will be frequent reports to parents on their children’s progress.
    • There will be reasonable access to staff, opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and opportunities to observe classroom activities.
  6. The school will provide assistance to parents in understanding the state academic content standards, assessments, and how to monitor a child’s progress.
  7. The school will provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their child’s achievement.
  8. The school will educate the staff in the value and utility of contributions of parent and in how to reach out to, communicate with and work with parents as equal partners.
  9. The school will coordinate and integrate parent involvement programs and house a parent center that supports this aim.
  10. The school will send information to parents regarding school and parent programs and meetings in English and Spanish.
  11. Opportunities will be provided for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children.
  12. Parents and community members will be involved and support our school by volunteering and/or providing resources that support our instructional and enrichment programs.
  13. The Parent Involvement Policy will be reviewed and revised annually.
